Roman Catholics
Roman Catholics believe that the Pope is in “apostolic succession” from St. Peter, drawing on Jesus’ words that the “keys to the kingdom of heaven” were given to him (Matthew 16.19). A related belief is that Roman Catholics are the oldest tradition. Roman Catholics place a higher value on saints (particularly St. Mary the mother of Jesus), sacraments (particularly the Eucharist), and the importance of tradition and reason over subjective experience. While it has not always been the case, Roman Catholic priests must be both celibate and male.
Roman Catholics continue a rich tradition of monasteries and nunneries, charitable works, and pilgrimages to sacred sites.
